SKILLS IN DEMAND (SID) Visa (Subclass 482)
As of December 7, 2024, the Australian government has replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa with the new Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482).
This temporary visa lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they can’t find a suitably skilled Australian to fill.
Key Features:
Three-Tiered System: The SID visa introduces a three-tiered system to address labor market needs:
- Specialist Skills Pathway: For highly skilled migrants earning at least $135,000 annually.
Core Skills Pathway: Targets key industries with a consolidated Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) comprising 456 occupations.
Essential Skills Pathway: Details are pending release.
Eligibility Criteria:
Occupation and Salary Requirements: Applicants must meet specific occupation and salary criteria relevant to their chosen pathway.
Sponsorship: A valid sponsorship from an approved Australian employer is mandatory.
Financial Viability of Employers: Sponsors must demonstrate financial capacity to employ the worker for the nominated period.
Application Process:
Employer Nomination: An approved Australian employer nominates the prospective employee for a position that aligns with the SID visa requirements.
Visa Application: The nominated individual submits a visa application, providing evidence of qualifications, work experience, and English language proficiency.
Assessment and Decision: The Department of Home Affairs assesses the application against the relevant criteria and makes a decision accordingly.
BENEFITS
Flexibility: visa holders benefit from increased job mobility and extended timeframes to secure new sponsorship if employment is terminated.
Pathway to Permanent Residency: The SID visa offers a clearer route to permanent residency for eligible applicants.
